i have vista ultimate 32 bit with AVG free edition anti-virus
if there are any free firewalls that would be better

Chosen Answer:

For pay, I would go for ZoneAlarm Pro (#1), Comodo Pro, or ESET Smart Security. Norton 360 or McAfee are secondary (and second-tier) options.

http://www.all-internet-security.com/top_10_firewall_software.html

For free, your best options are ZoneAlarm Free (#1-tie), Outpost (#1-tie), Comodo, PC Tools and Online Armor.
Try this link:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm#Quick_Selection_Guide

I use ZoneAlarm Pro and have never looked back. It’s comprehensive, intuitive, reliable, not too demanding on the system resources, and even has a “learning mode” for when it first gets to know your system, so that it learns your computer/habits and does not scream at everything it comes across. Plus, it has a proven track record for being an industry leader.

However, it is important that you do your own quick research after reading these recommendations, and see what you think is the best solution/value.

Good luck.

My pc has been infected with spyware and i have a virus scan but apparently it is not doing the job. I need some good and authentic, but free anitvirus and antispyware.

Chosen Answer:

No PC security product can possibly protect you from every new spyware and malware threat.
Some of these new threats would be undetected by most of the popular security programs, including the ones we all use. Some antivirus will detect spywares but can’t delete them so don’t think they don’t work is just that they are not designed to solve those issues.
Here is a list softwares so you can create your own security suite based on freewares, this not only will secure your computer but also boost its performance.

Anti virus: Just run one antivirus on your PC, both options are great but i recommend AVG.

AVG free edition.

http://www.download.com/avg-anti-virus…..

Avira Antivir:

http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Pe…

Anti spyware: You can run more than one.

Ad-aware

http://www.download.com/ad-aware-2007/…..

Spybot S&D

http://www.download.com/spybot-search-…..

Spywareblaster

http://www.download.com/spywareblaster…..

Firewall:
Zonealarm

http://www.download.com/zonealarm-fire…..

Registry cleaner:
advanced windows care personal

http://www.download.com/advanced-windo…..

This is another combination recently posted at cnet.com
Comodo firewall+avira antivir+spyware terminator all of them are free and are excellent choices. I only add spywareblaster and advanced windowscare to that combo. you can download all of them at download.com.Restart in safe mode then run all your security software one by one. Be patient because this take some time to get it done and do it at list once per month

How big is the average virus…?
How big can a virus be…?

Chosen Answer:

They can get up 6 feet tall.

Actually, viruses can be imbedded inside a program of any size. They can also be part of a zipped file of any size. So, if this is true, then I would use something other than ZoneAlarm.

Chosen Answer:

i only have used two since the 90′s:

spybot search and destroy

and

windows restore

and have never had a problem with virii, ever.

Also, since i turned on TeaTimer (which comes with Spybot,) and switched to firefox, I’ve never used restore.

It seems to be very good software for protecting your computer. It also seems to be less complicated to use than McAfee or Norton.

The anti-rootkit and anti-keylogger features are a very good idea with the type of malware being written lately. You can always get another firewall such as Zone Alarm. Here is a link:

I have WinXP Home and SP1. I don’t update stuff that works. There are instructions on the web for blocking updates with WinXP Pro, where you can set folder permissions, but not for the Home edition. The update happens even though I have set the folder and files to “read only”. Currently the only option I have is to uninstall it when it updates and reinstall. Isn’t there some way to block Google from taking over my computer like this?

Chosen Answer:

Not in google you can’t. Auto updating is an integrated feature. You can block it from doing so by blocking it with a firewall. The firewall that ships with xp does not do this. You can get zonealarm free & it will block outgoing traffic from programs.

As for your not updating, you really should with your xp. XP sp1 was sooooooo bad that microsoft ended support for it in july 06 (it ended support for 98 & ME in 2006 for comparison). Sp2 is a free download & fixes ton’s of issues and patches all the holes sp1 had.

My Norton Internet Security is expiring soon & I’m planning to get ZoneAlarm Pro for firewall. Have you have good or bad experiences with the CA Antivirus provided free by AT&T Yahoo? If it’s not good, I’ll either get the ZoneAlarm suite or upgrade my Norton.
I thank everyone so far for providing answers, but I’m only interested in people who Actually Have or Have Used the Antivirus by CA provided by SBC/AT&T Yahoo! Online Protection. So far, it’s 1 For & 1 Against.
Again, if you use or have used this, I’d like to hear from YOU!

Chosen Answer:

First of all you need to understand that the AT&T Yahoo protection package is not free. You are paying for it as part of your DSL fees.

I use the package and am very happy with it. I recommend it highly. I have been infection free for almost a year. I use this package with two additional programs and get great protection. I use the Window Defender Beta 2 and SpywareBlaster with my package. The additional Anti-Spyware programs are necessary since no single AS program can protect against all the Spyware on the net.

Get WDB2 and use the learning sites to set it up and use it properly and you will get great protection from it.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Get SpywareBlaster here:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_spywareblaster/

I also recommend you read this site. You will learn a lot about malware and protecting your computer. It is well worth the investment (because you get a great return) of time.

I have heard that sometimes, free anti-virus software is better than paid for stuff. So i was wondering, which is the best free one so that I can compare it to the one I currently have and see if I would be better off getting a free anti-virus or firewall software.

Chosen Answer:

well whoever suggests AVG or AVAST are simply novice with virus protection .. if you go to www.av-comparatives.org .. you will see that according to tests .. they failed badly.. AVG has only 75% detection rate and avast around teh border line of 77%… i used to use both .. and laot of nasties got through.. what i would suggest for a good FREE antivirus is avira (antivir) you can get it at www.antivir.com there is a paid version that includes an antispyware with it… anyhow as far as firewalls go .. i would suggest comodo ( it passed not most but all leak tests)- i did use zonealarm and trust it comodo blows it away… www.comodo.com (its free) .. as for spyware protection i use spywareterminator.com … its froma company called crawler .. it has live protection.. and up2date defenition files .. also its free .. and beats teh hell outta adaware 2007 (that became bloatware) and the crappy spybot that doesnt even have live protection… so there u go i gave u.. what i use .. and strongly recommend.
